Night birds call as the purple shadows of the Lebombo mountains lengthen across the lake setting a scene for a truly romantic, unforgettable evening. Flickering paraffin lanterns light up the night, silver and glass sparkle on a crisp white linen table set just for two.

Tigerfishing Package

Valid 1 September 2009 to 30 October 2010
(Minimum of 2 nights)

A major angling gamefish, the striking tigerfish, can be recognised by the bluish sheen on its back, a series of parallel longitudinal black stripes, intensive yellow to blood red fins with trailing black edges and a series of 8 large, protruding, sharply pointed teeth.

Aptly described as voracious and fierce, the tigerfish are found in warm, well oxygenated water, mainly in larger rivers and lakes, tending to frequent the surface layers where it often falls prey to the swooping African Fish Eagle.

Lake Jozini is the Pongola Game Reserve is the most southern river / lake where tigerfish are endemic. Although widespread and still common in certain areas like the Pongola river, tigerfish are declining in most rivers due to pollution, water extraction and obstructions like weirs and dams that prevent their passage up-or downstream to suitable spawning sites along flooded river banks and lake shores.

From the novice fisherman to the expert anglers fishing with a fly, Lake Jozini offers you the ideal location for tigerfish of a lifetime, while you enjoy the pristine wilderness setting that compares favourably to the wilds of Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe.

Lake Jozini fish species list:

Barbel - Clarias Gariepinus
Bulldog - Marcusenius macrolepidotus
Butter Barbel - Brycinus imberi
Imberi - Labeo congoro
Purple labeo - Labeo rosae
Mozambique Telapia - Oreochromis mossambicus
Redbreasted Telapia - Tilapia rendalli
Tiger Fish - Hydrocinus vittatus

Birding Package

Valid 1 September 2009 to 30 October 2010
(Minimum of 2 nights)

“Arriving fairly late in the afternoon, we were treated to sightings of Flapped Lark and Arrow-marked Babbler on the road to the camp. In the camp itself, it seemed as if the AGM of the Yellow/billed Hornbill Society was in progress, as about 20 were sitting in one tree alone!”

“Other common camp residents over the next couple of days were White-throated Robin, Crested Barbet and on of the reserve’s specials, Burchell’s Starling. The starlings only occur in a thin belt in far northern KZN, but are resident in the Pongola Game Reserve. They behave just like their relatives do in Kruger: noisy, bold and even taking to stealing our fruit!”

“At night we were treated to Pearl-spotted, White-faced, Barn, Scobs and Spottted Eagle Owl calling around camp, as well as hyaena, jackal and Fiery-necked Nightjar. The bush was alive with birds, even though it was dry and mid winter. Burnt-necked Eremomela, Mleba Finch, Lilac-breasted Roller, Bearded Woodpecker and Straped Kingfisher were recorded in open woodland, while Gorgeous Bush Shrike, Rudd’s Apalis, Grey Penduline Tit and paradise Flycatcher were recorded from denser bush. Other interesting birds include Wattled Starling, Red-billed Oxpecker, Grey Honeyguide, Kurrichane, Butttonquail, Alpine Swift and Red-crested Korhaan. Other White Elephant specials such as Long-tailed Shrike, Grey Louri and Grey Hornbill were also seen, it seems strange to see this “Kruger” species in our province!”

“Raptors were present, and in numbers. Over 100 White-backed Vulture were seen at the vulture restaurant, as well as home, but we were treated to one last highlight; a boat cruise at Lake Jozini, which turned out to be the landlubber’s equivalent Squacco and Green-backed, Black-winged Stilt, African Jacana, Black Crake, Glossi Ibis, African Spoonbill etc. etc. A breeding colony of Yellow-billed Stork, containing at least 20 pairs, proved to be the cherry on the top. The large crocs and the hippo’s kept us from jumping to high for joy, though, for fear of capsizing our double-decker boar! We also counted at least 6 active White-backed Vulture nests from the boat, all in tallish thorn trees.”

“Many thanks to the White Elephant staff and their guides for sharing with us your little patch of paradise.”
